Whether you’re training for a marathon or chasing a toddler around the house, there are plenty of reasons to want more stamina. Often referred to as endurance, stamina is your ability to sustain a physical or mental effort for a long period of time. If you’ve been experiencing a personal energy crisis lately (outside of dealing with your utility bills), developing your endurance might be just the thing for recovering your zing.
Boosting your fitness level, no matter how you do it, will up your endurance in the bedroom, but Pilates takes it a step further with its focus on working the pelvic-floor muscles. Women have been told to exercise these deep muscles for years to increase their sexual stamina, but men are learning that they can benefit too.
A 2005 study by Grace Dorey, PhD, at the Somerset Nuffield Hospital in Taunton, England, showed pelvic-floor strengthening to be as effective as drugs for treating erectile dysfunction. Forty percent of the men in the test groups regained normal erectile function, and 36 percent showed marked improvement. So forget the Viagra and find your way to a Pilates studio.
